US President Donald Trump has called on the country to pardon Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu or drop the trial against him on corruption charges. He said that the United States will protect Netanyahu just as it protected Israel.

Trump said this in a post on his social media account Truth Social on Wednesday.

Trump also praised Netanyahu as a “warrior.” He wrote, “The United States protected Israel. Now the United States will protect Netanyahu.”

This is likely an indication of the United States’ participation and support in the Israeli attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities. However, it is not clear whether the United States has indicated that it will help Netanyahu in his legal fight.

Meanwhile, Netanyahu was indicted in Israel in 2019 on bribery, fraud and treason charges. However, he has denied all of these charges.

The trial of three criminal cases against Netanyahu on these charges began in 2020. He has maintained his innocence throughout the trial.

Trump wrote on Truth Social, “The trial of Benjamin Netanyahu should be immediately overturned or a great hero like him should be pardoned; who has done so much for the country (Israel).” Trump also wrote that he learned that Netanyahu is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.

Israeli media reported that Netanyahu’s questioning began on June 3 in a Tel Aviv court. It is believed that the trial will take about a year to complete.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog has the power to pardon Netanyahu. However, according to Israeli media, he said, “The pardon is not being considered at this time. And no such request has been made.”
